The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has donated GH¢20,000 to support the educational journey of Fauzia Ali, a 20-year-old whose dreams of pursuing a career in medicine were nearly derailed due to financial challenges.

Mr Mahama presented the cash donation to Fauzia’s mother, Zainab Toro, on Monday during his visit to the Asawase constituency as part of his campaign activities in the Ashanti Region.

The former president first met Fauzia in Tamale after reading her story and promised to support her, including providing a scholarship package under a future NDC government. This cash donation serves as an initial intervention from Mr Mahama to help Fauzia cover fees and other expenses as she begins her educational journey at the University for Development Studies (UDS).

Before presenting the funds, Mr Mahama reiterated his commitment to improving the quality of education in Ghana and emphasised measures to support brilliant but needy students, ensuring financial barriers do not prevent them from pursuing their educational goals.

Fauzia’s mother expressed her gratitude to Mr Mahama and assured him the funds would be used for the intended purpose.

Fauzia was compelled to help her mother sell roasted plantain in Kumasi after it became apparent, they couldn’t afford the six-year medical programme at UDS’s Tamale campus.

Citi News‘ report on her situation captured the attention of many benevolent members of society, who contributed generously to ensure Fauzia’s potential wasn’t wasted.

Thanks to this support, Fauzia officially reported to campus on Monday, October 28, 2024, to start her academic journey. Among the prominent donors was Charles Adu Boahen, a former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, who, despite being outside Ghana, contributed funds for her tuition, accommodation, and personal expenses.

Other generous supporters included businessman Ebenezer Felix Bentum and the Iqra Educational Center. JF Halal Investment and members of the Vandal 93 group also donated to help Fauzia achieve her dream.

Additional support came from staff members of Ecobank Ghana, some Muslim staff of the Bank of Ghana, and a group of professionals in the oil and gas industry. Furthermore, the manager of Prestige Hostel in Tamale offered Fauzia a one-year accommodation as she began her six-year programme at UDS. As a result of these donations, Fauzia has since been able to pay her admission fees, school fees, and purchase some textbooks.

A group of volunteers has opened a special bank account in her name to receive ongoing financial support for the brilliant but needy student. They hope to raise enough funds to support not only Fauzia in her medical studies but also other promising students in similar circumstances.

Fauzia expressed her gratitude to all who contributed to her journey and others who plan to do so, saying, “Thank you very much. May Allah continue to bless you. Please thank them for me; I am truly grateful. People like them make the dreams of the poor come true. May God replenish their pockets. I am deeply thankful.”

Below are the bank details for Fauzia’s support:
