Work is progressing steadily on the upgrade of the Todome-Dzemeni road in the South Dayi district of the Volta region, bringing relief to motorists and residents in communities along the stretch.
The 24.7-kilometre stretch, which is being undertaken by SANAM GH Ltd, is scheduled to be completed in October 2027.
The road is considered a critical economic road, given that Dzemeni serves as a major trading centre along the Volta Lake.
The road also serves as a major link between communities such as Kpeyiborme, Tsate, To Kpalime, Tongor, among others, who serve as the district’s food bank.
But for a long time, the stretch had become increasingly unmotorable, impacting the movement of people and economic activities.
Mercy Serwaa, a resident of Tsate, said on Monday, “First, the road was so bad. We are farmers, so we take maize, cassava, pepper and other foodstuffs to the Dzemeni market, but because of the nature of the road, drivers charge more transport fares, and we end up making less profit.”
Another resident, who only identified himself as Pablo, said the state of the road prior to the commencement of work in October impacted his business negatively.
Under the government’s Big Push initiative, construction works began on the 24.7km road in October last year.
The work which is being done by SANAM Gh Ltd, a Ghanaian-owned construction firm, includes the upgrade of Dzemeni township roads.
Project Manager of the company, Gabriel Adomako Boateng, told reporters that significant work has already been done while indicating that work could be executed by the end of this year rather than the October 2027 deadline.
“What we have done so far indicates that we can finish the project by the end of this year. We have adequate capacity and machinery to deliver timely but quality work,” he said.
“We are done with almost all concrete works, including culverts, drains and the necessary adjustments, and so we are far ahead of schedule,” he added.
The District Chief Executive for South Dayi, Courage Kwame Kokoroko, says the Assembly is keenly monitoring the project to ensure timely and quality execution of the project despite the commendable progress made so far.
He commended the company for the speed and quality of work while emphasising the need to ensure timely completion.
When completed, the Todome-Toh Kpalime to Dzemeni road will ease the movement of people, goods and services while considerably reducing travel time and transportation cost for both motorists and traders.
