The Takoradi Technical University has matriculated a record 7,244 freshmen and women after offering admission to 9,436 out of the total 10,061 applicants.
The 7,244 matriculants are pursuing Diploma, HND, Degree, and Masters programs among others at its five Faculties and schools.
Speaking at the 24th Matriculation Ceremony of Takoradi Technical University, the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, said the increased number of applicants to the University for the 2023/2024 academic year, which is the largest number in the 70-year existence of TTU, lays credence to Takoradi Technical University’s undisputed place as a true Center of Excellence in TVET education.
With the Faculty of Engineering recording the highest number of matriculants totalling 2,327 out of the 7,244 freshers, the Vice Chancellor hailed TTU’s focus on its mandate as a TVET University.
“Admissions to TVET programmes constitute 79%, while other programmes present 21%. This is an indication that TTU is committed to operating within its mandate,“ he noted.
While congratulating the freshers for choosing TTU and successfully getting admitted, Rev. Prof. Eshun assured the freshers that the University has the right experts to help nurture them in their choice of academic programs.
“Each of you has worked diligently to reach this pivotal moment, and I commend you for your hard work. Takoradi Technical University is a community of dedicated individuals who are passionate about education, innovation, and societal development. We take pride in our commitment to excellence and strive to create an environment that fosters academic rigour, critical thinking, creativity, and innovation. Our faculty members are renowned experts in their respective fields, and they are here to guide and mentor you throughout your academic journey,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor further advised the freshers to adhere to the University’s regulations and commit to good behaviour to stand a better chance of achieving their set goals to justify their parents’ investment in their education.
“Your lecturers, parents, and guardians have high expectations of you, so please do not let them down. As you embark on this exciting journey, it is essential to remember the values that underpin our institution – commitment, integrity, teamwork, and collegiality, excellence, and diversity. Upholding these values will not only build your character but also strengthen the reputation of Takoradi Technical University. Treat your fellow students, faculty, and staff with respect and value the diversity that enriches our community…My advice to you is to be careful with the people you associate with. You should abstain from all social vices such as drugs, alcohol abuse, promiscuity, occultism, and similar practices,” he added.
Registrar of TTU, Dr. Moses Maclean Abnory, also highlighted some significance of the 2023/2024 TTU admissions and the University’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all persons, mentioning that the University set a record of admitting 25 persons with special disabilities, with one also pursuing a Master’s Programme.
Dr. Victor Fannam Nunfam, who is the Dean of TTU’s Centre for Languages and Liberal Studies, CELLIBS, and Jonathan Cudjoe, a Deputy Registrar In-Charge of the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat, both orienting the matriculants on Energy saving respectively mentioned that TTU spends GH3.7 million on energy consumption annually, with students incurring GHS1.2 million electric cost to the university; hence, they must conserve energy.
“Let’s, therefore, avoid the use of high-consuming electrical gadgets such as air conditioners, freezers, cooking stoves… If you are leaving the office or hostel, put off the light and other electrical gadgets,” he said.
“Try to conserve energy to help cut costs. When you don’t need it, let’s turn off the lights because it creates unnecessary costs for the university which also becomes a burden,” he added.
On his part, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of TTU, Prof. Victor Kweku Bonzie Micah, encouraged the matriculants to be part and support the numerous planned activities towards TTU’s upcoming 70th Anniversary celebrations.
