Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has heralded the Ghana Card Number at birth as one of the systems that will transform the country’s identity system.

The initiative, which aims to integrate birth registration with national identity systems, promises to transform the way citizens are recognized and valued from the moment of birth.

Speaking at the launch event in Accra on Thursday, March 14, 2024, Dr. Bawumia underscored the significance of this milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation journey.

“The Ghana Card Number at birth is not just an ID; it’s a promise to our children of a future where their identity and rights are recognized from their very first breath,” remarked Dr. Bawumia.

“This initiative lays the groundwork for a digital ecosystem that empowers every citizen, from birth, and represents a significant step towards leveraging technology for national progress,” he added.

He highlighted its role in streamlining birth registration and ensuring every Ghanaian, from the moment of birth, is recognized and valued within the national identity framework.

Dr. Bawumia reiterated the government’s commitment to modernizing Ghana’s identity management systems, ensuring efficient service delivery, and safeguarding the rights of citizens, particularly mothers and children.

He expressed gratitude to all partners involved in making the Ghana Card Number at Birth project a reality and emphasized the collective effort required to build an effective, efficient, and responsive public sector.

The event was attended by notable dignitaries including Health Minister-designate Benard Okoe-Boye, Minister for Works and Housing-designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister for Information-designate Fatimatu Abubakar, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, and Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Prof. Ken Attafuah among other well-known signatures.
