The Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers from various colleges of education in Ghana has convened a press conference to voice their concerns over delays in their posting.
According to them, despite reaching out to the appropriate departments to address their issues, the group stated that their grievances remain unaddressed.
With a membership of approximately 10,000, the group questions the reasons behind the delay in their recruitment, pointing out that traditionally, trained teachers are posted immediately upon completing their studies and mandatory national service.
During a press conference in Tamale, the president of the coalition of unemployed trained teachers, Tahiru Mohammed Mutala, highlighted the potential effect of the backlog of teachers in the system if they remain unemployed while new graduates join them.
Meanwhile, the group has vowed to take to the streets in May to express their dissatisfaction if their concerns are not addressed promptly.
Another member who spoke to Citi News, Mohamed Abdallah, has expressed disappointment in the government’s recruitment of teacher trainees, indicating the frustrations it brings members.
He revealed their decision to not exercise their franchise come December general elections.
“It has been very frustrating and we want to urge the government and the Ministry of Education to do the needful by recruiting us as soon as possible. We have parents and younger siblings who, by now, we are supposed to be taking care of them but some of us cannot go back to our villages.
“So, we are pleading with the government to please do the needful and save us from the suffering; otherwise, in the coming days or weeks, we will be forced onto the street, or subsequently, the reflection might be seen on December 7, 2024,” he stated.
