The Volta River Authority (VRA) expects minimal impact in its next phase of water spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

The VRA has announced a possible controlled water spillage from the dam in the coming weeks.

Director of Environment and Sustainable Development at VRA, Ben Sackey said the Authority has begun extensive stakeholder engagement.

“Every year, we come and have an education on the latest spill, the district assembly can bear witness to that, since 2011. But, the number of people and those who were part was limited, but from what has happened [that is why we have engaged lots of people], the Director of Environment and Sustainable Development at VRA stated.

The spillage, which started on September 15, 2023, resulted in the displacement of approximately 39,000 residents and the loss of farmlands.

It was intensified for three weeks to protect the integrity of the Dam.

As a result, eight districts across three regions – Asuogyaman, Shai Osudoku, North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Keta Municipal, Ketu South Municipal, and Ada East, suffered severe flooding.
