The Institute of Local Government Studies in Accra is currently undergoing significant expansion, with plans to become a fully operational university by November 2024.

Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, visited the campus to evaluate the progress of ongoing projects.

These include the construction of a five-storey lecture block, 560 executive hostel rooms, and a new entrance, among other developments.

Established in 2003 by Act 647, the Institute of Local Government Studies aims to bolster the capacity of local government authorities and services in Ghana.

In 2022, the Government of Ghana initiated construction works to elevate the Institute to a full-fledged university, with the Ministry of Local Government supervising the project and implementing necessary measures for its successful completion.

The Minister confirmed that the ministry is prepared to present a bill to Parliament for the Institute’s upgrade to a university.

He assured that all required funding has been allocated to complete the expansion by November 2024, thereby transforming the institute into a full-fledged university.

He further emphasised that the upgraded institute would enhance the human resource capabilities of the local government systems in the country.
