The inhabitants of the Bangwon community in the Lambusie district of the Upper West region continue to struggle to access telecommunication networks, despite numerous appeals to various stakeholders to establish a telephone network.
The lack of a telecommunication network in the area is severely hindering the community’s socioeconomic development, as residents are deprived of digital access and must travel several kilometres to access telephone services. Bangwon, a border community in the extreme north of the Lambusie district, shares Ghana’s territorial boundaries with Burkina Faso.
The area is known for its agricultural production and serves as a haven for migrants from Burkina Faso, particularly during insurgent attacks in the troubled West African country.
With a population of approximately 1500, the Bangwon community remains without telephone services, isolating the area from the rest of the country.

Residents must travel several kilometres to access the telephone network to call security services whenever there is an influx of migrants from Burkina Faso due to insurgent activities in that country.
The chief of Bangwon, Kuoru Yibini Sumino, highlighted the village’s concerns and lamented that the inhabitants live in constant fear due to the delays they experience when reporting the influx of migrants to security services.
Education in the Bangwon community is also impeded, as teachers refuse to accept postings to the area.
The few teachers who do accept postings struggle to teach subjects like ICT. Lydia Kan, a midwife at the Bangwon CHPS compound, narrated how the absence of telephone service negatively impacts healthcare delivery in the community.
Nikoe Iddrisu, the assemblyman for the Bangwon electoral area, shed light on the challenges confronting the area.
The district chief executive for Lambusie George Naluri shared the concerns of the Bangwon electoral area but declined to speak on camera. However, he assured that plans are underway to address the issue.
