Election 2024: My faith doesn’t support LGBTQ+ – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to intensify efforts to combat LGBTQ+ activities should he assume office in the 2024 elections.

He emphasised his commitment to strengthening legislation aimed at curbing the influence and practices of the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana.

Speaking to members of the clergy during a gathering in Accra on Tuesday, Mahama expressed concerns over the delayed passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill under the current administration.

President Akufo-Addo has yet to sign the bill, citing ongoing legal challenges at the Supreme Court, which has further stalled its progress.

Mahama firmly stated that his stance on the LGBTQ+ issue is deeply rooted in his personal faith and values, which align with the majority of Ghanaians who oppose the legalisation or normalisation of LGBTQ+ practices in the country.

He assured religious leaders that his government would prioritise this issue and ensure the swift enactment of the anti-LGBTQ+ law once he assumed office.

“My faith doesn’t permit same-sex marriages or relationships, nor does it endorse human-animal relationships or allow people to change their gender as they wish.”

“This is a fundamental belief that I hold, and it is grounded in my faith. I therefore assure you that the promotion of LGBTQ+ will have no place in our schools and communities,” he stated.
