Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Ghana’s former ambassador to the United States, has offered advice to Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the newly elected Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Spio-Garbrah encouraged Ayorkor Botchwey to collaborate fully with the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, should they win the 2024 general elections.
He stressed the importance of putting aside political differences and working together for the nation’s progress.
Spio-Garbrah also congratulated Ayorkor Botchwey on her election to the prestigious role of Secretary-General, expressing confidence in her ability to represent and promote Ghana’s interests on the global stage.
“The next government will have a very big challenge in terms of how to manage the economy and how to get international support. Ghana is a very small country, in the global system, Africa as a whole is only worth 2% of global trade, global capital flows and global anything.
“If Ghana is to get out of financial difficulties, International financial relationships are going to be very critical. And having a friendly person, if she chooses to be friendly. I hope she will because first of course a Ghanaian before she becomes Secretary-General, that’s Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey who I know quite well.
“I wish her well, I sent a congratulatory message to her when she got elected. I think she’s following some of the footsteps of those who have served the Commonwealth in the past, very creditably and I’m sure she will be successful.
“It will require her to cooperate with what may and turn out to be. A non-NPP government in the government of Ghana, under John Mahama and all of us, will be happy to work with her if she plays her cards well.”
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, was selected as the new Commonwealth Secretary-General during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) held in Apia, Samoa, on Friday, October 26
