The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, has refuted recent claims that the government plans to hand over operational control of the newly inaugurated Jamestown Fishing Harbour to a Chinese company.
The accusation, made by Alfred Kotey Ashie, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Odododiodio, asserts that the government is disadvantaging local fishermen and rendering the new facility ineffective by planning to allow foreign vessels, particularly Chinese-owned ones, to operate in Ghanaian waters.
Speaking to journalists during an awards ceremony honouring the region’s best farmers, Titus-Glover condemned the allegations, describing them as “baseless and unfounded.”
He dismissed the idea that any arrangements had been made to cede the Jamestown Fishing Harbour to foreign operators, stressing that such claims are false and intended only to mislead the public.
He also explained that the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), which is responsible for the country’s ports, has been given full oversight over the Jamestown Fishing Harbour’s development and management.
“In terms of port development, construction, planning, management, it is in the hands of the Ghana Ports and Hours Authority. It is a security zone. As I speak to you now, a lot of work has been done to know all the various departments, then they will be doing the recruitment.
“I am hearing the NDC doing some propaganda that we want to give it to the Chinese. It is totally wrong. It is not true. I know for a fact that the Ministry of Transport and GPHA are working closely together with the RCC to make sure that we employ people to go and work.
“So clearly we can see that in the fishing industry something has been done. There are a lot of landing beaches that have been built to support the fishermen and all that,” he stated.
