AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has been named Ghana’s Best Mining Company for 2024 at the prestigious 10th Ghana Mining Industry Awards, organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
The company’s Managing Director for the Obuasi Mine, Samuel Boakye Pobee also received the coveted Mining Personality of the Year award, cementing AngloGold Ashanti’s leadership in the sector.
This year’s ceremony, themed “Celebrating a Decade of Rewarding Mining Excellence,” recognized exceptional contributions to the mining industry. Among the honorees was Mr. James Kwamena Anaman, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his remarkable service to the sector.
In a historic moment, Mrs. Alexandra Amoako- Mensah, the first female geologist credited with the lithium discovery in the Ewoyaa Project, was celebrated with an honorary plaque and citation. Her over five decades of dedication to Ghana’s mining industry were hailed as groundbreaking and inspirational.
Newmont Ghana also won the best performer in diversity and inclusion as well as best performer in corporate social investment project of the year.
In his remarks, Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Dr. Sulemanu Koney highlighted the chambers contributions to the country’s economic growth.
“In 2023, producing members of the chamber generated mineral revenue exceeding 5.88 billion dollars with over 71 percent of this returned into the country to support their operations and also to meet their statutory obligations,” he said.
Dr. Sulemanu Koney, also reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at transforming mining communities.
“An abiding ambition of the chamber is to see mining towns such as Tarkwa, Obuasi and others transform into regional hubs of industry and innovation. Achieving this requires deliberate investment in infrastructure, education and technology. The Chamber is committed to collaborating with the government and other private sector players on how to release this vision,” he added.
