Ayensuano EC office set ablaze by unknown thugs

The Ayensuano District Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Asuboi has been set ablaze by unknown individuals, destroying all electoral materials and devices used in the just-ended elections for the Ayensuano constituency.

The motive behind the arson remains unclear. However, the incident occurred shortly after a group calling itself the Ayensuano Concerned Youth staged a protest at the EC office, expressing dissatisfaction over the declaration of Ida Adwoa Asiedu as the Member of Parliament-elect for the constituency.

Mante Gyebi, a spokesperson for the Ayensuano Concerned Youth Association, described the act as unfortunate but distanced the group from the arson. During the protest, Gyebi issued a five-hour ultimatum to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the situation.

Authorities are yet to determine the identities of the perpetrators or their exact motives. Investigations are ongoing, and security has been heightened in the area to prevent further disturbances.

“We saw the policemen at the gate when we got there, and one of our boys went to ease himself before he released that a gentleman was standing behind the window but he had no idea why he was standing there”.

“A few seconds later, we perceived smoke in the area then we got to know that the gentleman who was spotted behind the window was responsible for it.

“We did not go to the EC’s office with basic intention, we went there because we knew that the EC officials were there. We are not responsible for the incident we did not go to the EC’s office to fight but we went there to inform them that we were not happy with what they did and came back,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the NDC chairman for Ayensuano Constituency Yabuku Amudu who expressed worry about the incident dispelled claims that sympathizers of his party initiated the action.
