From international sporting milestones to major celebrity news, 2024 was a year defined by global moments that captivated the world’s curiosity.

Google has unveiled its annual Year in Search report, revealing the top 10 trending searches that dominated the platform from January to November 2024.

The list highlights searches that saw the most significant surge in interest compared to 2023, offering a fascinating snapshot of global priorities and concerns.

Top 10 Trending Google Searches in 2024

Here’s a look at the most searched topics and when they peaked:

1. Copa América – June 30 – July 6
2. UEFA European Championship – June 23 – June 29
3. ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – May 26 – June 1
4. India vs England – February 18 – February 24
5. Liam Payne – October 13 – 19
6. Donald Trump – November 3 – November 9
7. India vs Bangladesh – September 15 – September 21
8. iPhone 16 – September 8 – September 14
9. Olympics – August 4 – August 10
10. Catherine, Princess of Wales – March 17 – March 23
Sporting Glory Steals the Spotlight

Sports dominated the top trends, reflecting global enthusiasm for major tournaments. Football reigned supreme with the Copa América and UEFA European Championship drawing attention in June and July. The Paris Olympics, held in late July, rounded out a summer of thrilling athletic competition.

Cricket also made a strong showing, with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June and India’s victorious Test series against England in February capturing immense interest. The T20 World Cup was particularly noteworthy, as it marked the first time the United States co-hosted an ICC tournament alongside the West Indies.

Celebrity News and Tech Trends

Tragedy struck the music world with the death of former One Direction member Liam Payne in October, which spurred an outpouring of grief and memories online. Earlier in the year, the Princess of Wales, Catherine, revealed her battle with cancer in March, drawing widespread sympathy and support.

Tech enthusiasts kept tabs on the launch of Apple’s latest device, the iPhone 16, in September, securing it a place among the year’s most searched topics.

Politics in the Spotlight

Donald Trump, always a lightning rod for public interest, made headlines throughout the year. His re-election victory in November drove search spikes, as did the assassination attempt during a July campaign rally in Pennsylvania, a dramatic moment that shook the U.S. political landscape.
Reflections on a Tumultuous Year

The Year in Search 2024 rankings offer a poignant reminder of the stories that united, inspired, and intrigued people across the globe. From unforgettable sporting moments to personal tragedies and political intrigue, these searches reflect a year that was anything but ordinary.

What will 2025 bring? Only time, and perhaps a quick Google search, will tell.
