President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern about the escalating terrorism in neighbouring countries.

In a meeting with Mali’s Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maiga, Mahama raised alarm over the threat posed by extremist groups in the region and stressed the need for stronger regional cooperation.

The President assured Prime Minister Maiga that Ghana would continue to support Mali and other countries in their efforts to combat terrorism and restore stability.

Mali Prime Minister Maiga

“We recognise the relationship we have and how we must work closely together. We know what is happening in the geo-politics of our sub-region and the unfortunate situation unfolding in the Sahel. It is not anything that is new, but it continues to become more grave than it was in the past. I’m talking about the issue of insurgency and terrorism.”

“And so, our security is an echelon objective and we must work with each other to make sure that our sub-region is safe. Ghana continues to remain strong in solidarity with Mali.”

The President also announced that Ghana and Mali would form joint technical teams to address challenges in their bilateral relations.

The teams are expected to collaborate in identifying and resolving existing issues.

Meanwhile, Mali’s Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Maiga, expressed optimism about strengthening economic and security cooperation between Mali and Ghana.

“We’re convinced that our two leaders have the way to ensure the cooperation, economic matters and security.”
