First-year students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have shared mixed reactions to the government’s initiative to cover their academic fees.
While some applaud the financial relief it provides, others believe the policy could be better targeted and more sustainable.
Many students welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on their families’ finances. For some, the policy represents an opportunity to focus on education without the immediate worry of tuition fees.
A student expressed optimism, stating, “This policy will ease the financial burden for some of us because there is a saying that half a loaf is better than none. The government taking care of the fees will help me use that money for other important things.”
However, others argue the policy should focus on underprivileged students rather than being universally applied.
“We have family differences; everyone comes from a different background. It’s a great idea to assist with tuition fees, but the government should separate those who genuinely need help from those who can afford to pay.”
Some students expressed concerns about the policy’s sustainability, particularly if it only covers the first year.
“If this policy is meant to help parents save money for subsequent years, it’s good. However, not all parents will be able to afford the fees after the first year. If the government continues the policy throughout the four years, it’s a good idea. Otherwise, it might become a problem.”
The government’s approach to refunding students who have already paid their fees also faced criticism.
“I don’t see the point of the refund right now. The government could use that money to help students who are yet to pay or even cover the fees for second-year students as a way of fulfilling the promise.”
The reactions from the students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) follow John Dramani Mahama’s promise of paying the tuition fees for all first-year tertiary students when re-elected as president.
