The Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Edward Quao, has assured the public that the vegetation at the historic site will be fully restored within the next two months.
His promise comes in response to growing concerns regarding the park’s maintenance, particularly the state of its landscaping and public amenities.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which serves as the final resting place of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was reopened to the public on July 4, 2023, following extensive renovations.
However, recent images depicting the current condition of the park have sparked public outcry, with many questioning the sustainability and maintenance practices at the facility.
Addressing these concerns during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, February 3, Edward Quao reassured Ghanaians that concerted efforts were underway to restore the park to its former glory.
According to Edward Quao, the management team is working diligently to rectify the issues affecting the park’s lush greenery.
To address the water supply challenges, Mr Quao revealed that management had already initiated steps to implement an alternative irrigation system.
He disclosed that wells had been drilled within the park to supplement the water supply, which would significantly aid in maintaining the grass, plants, and overall greenery of the facility.
“We rely solely on Ghana Water Company for the water supply and there are men currently on site working on it. The fountain is supposed to have water at a certain level and if it rises beyond a certain level, the pump will burst
“We have wells drilled and we are trying a new irrigation system on the Park so we are hoping that the Park will become green again in the next two months.”
In addition to the vegetation concerns, visitors have also raised complaints about the condition of the park’s washroom facilities, which are reportedly out of service.
Addressing this, Mr Quao assured that repairs were actively ongoing, and the restrooms would soon be reopened to the public.
“Just last week, we had our plumber come to check what was wrong with the toilets and it is just about a matter of cleaning and we will get them back on. By where we are located, usage on the toilets is heavy and putting pressure on the toilets.”
