The University of Ghana Dental School is celebrating a historic moment as one of its top graduates, Dr. (Dent) Victoria Dovi Akpene Wosornu, emerged as the standout honoree at the 2025 Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Awards.
Held on April 5, in the University’s iconic Great Hall, the ceremony recognized the institution’s most outstanding students — and Dr. Wosornu stole the spotlight by winning six prestigious awards.
A graduating student of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program, Dr. Wosornu was honored for her outstanding academic and clinical performance. Her sweep of accolades is a clear testament to her hard work, intellectual excellence, and clinical competence.
The awards received by Dr. Wosornu include:
- University of Ghana Dental School Prize for Best Student in BDS Final Part III
- Dr. Christian Botchway Prize for Best Student in Oral Biology
- Dr. Barimah S. Adjei Prize for Best Student in Local Anesthesia
- Life Healthcare Center Prize for Best Final Year Dental Student
- Stephen Tettey Glover Prize for Best Student in Removable Prosthodontics
- Dr. Nana Kwame Asante-Appiah Prize for Best Student in Operative Technique
Her repeated appearances at the podium were met with applause and admiration from faculty, peers, and family. Describing the moment, attendees called her feat “historic” and “inspiring.”
Speaking after the ceremony, Dr. Wosornu expressed her gratitude.
“I am truly honored and humbled to receive these awards,” she said. “This achievement represents the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and countless hours of study. I am especially grateful for the unwavering support of my lecturers, mentors, and family.”
Originally from Takoradi and the youngest of four siblings, Dr. Wosornu demonstrated academic promise from an early age. A former student of Archbishop Porter Girls’ SHS, she represented the school in the 2018 National Science and Maths Quiz, an experience that fueled her decision to pursue dentistry.
Six years later, she graduates at the top of her class, having won six out of twelve possible awards at the School’s final academic ceremony.
Now looking ahead, Dr. Wosornu plans to begin her professional career at a reputable dental practice in Accra, where she hopes to gain hands-on experience and contribute to Ghana’s oral healthcare sector.
Faculty members were effusive in their praise.
“Ms. Wosornu has consistently demonstrated an exceptional level of dedication, intelligence, and compassion throughout her studies,” said Prof. Sandra Ama Hewlett, Dean of the Dental School. “These awards are a well-deserved recognition of her hard work and her immense potential.”
Her family, too, celebrated the milestone with pride.
“We have always known that Victoria was destined for something remarkable,” said her mother, Mad. Alice Dedjoe-Djokotoe. “We have no doubt she will make a meaningful impact on the lives of others through her work.”
Peers also lauded her as a supportive classmate and natural leader.
“She was always willing to help others and her passion for dentistry was infectious,” said Dr. Maame Darkoa Kissi, a fellow graduate.
Professor Alfred Yawson, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, commended her achievements as emblematic of the College’s mission.
“We aim to produce world-class professionals who are not only academically excellent but also community-minded. Dr. Wosornu exemplifies that vision.”
As she embarks on her professional journey, Dr. Wosornu’s success marks a new chapter for dentistry in Ghana — one filled with promise, excellence, and impact.
