The immediate past President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, has revealed that as of February 2025, the Court has tried over 700 human rights cases since 2005.
According to Justice Edward Amoako Asante, of these cases, the Court has delivered 454 judgments, 145 rulings, and 42 post-judgment decisions, making it the most active human rights court on the African continent.
He made these known during his public lecture themed “Building a Community Court of Justice that Works for the Citizens of ECOWAS”, held on Thursday, April 10.

Justice Amoako also called on the ECOWAS Court to strengthen its stakeholder engagement to enhance the Court’s efficiency and responsiveness.
He noted that despite the Court’s annual conferences, which have contributed to increased awareness and education on its mandate among stakeholders, more needs to be done to ensure its functions are widely known.
Justice Amoako also highlighted key achievements during his tenure, including the digitalization of the Court’s operations.
“As of February 28, 2025, a total of 727 cases have been tried by the court since it began operations in 2005. The court has delivered 454 judgments, 145 rulings, and 42 post-judgment decisions,” he stated.
Speaking as a chairman of the programme, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed commitment to exploring the possibility of the Ministry sponsoring internships for law students.

“Some foreign ministries do well in fellowships and even sponsoring internships for law students for them to understudy. We need to start looking at that, and it’s an idea that I, the minister, will facilitate protocols and extend diplomatic courtesies so that we can have this collaboration. I believe we work together for internships and fellowships.”
