Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that 71 illegal miners have been arrested and over 150 excavators, vehicles, and firearms seized in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at an event marking World Press Freedom Day—organised by the German Embassy and the UK High Commission in Accra on Monday, May 5—Kwakye Ofosu addressed diplomats, journalists, and stakeholders on the government’s efforts to curb illegal mining activities.

He emphasised the administration’s commitment to ending the menace, describing it as unwavering.

“As of the last brief that we got, 71 illegal miners have been arrested. Over 150 excavators, bulldozers, vehicles, and other weapons have been seized so far. Work is ongoing to ensure that the L.I 2462 no longer exists,” he assured.

Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that on March 20, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala, laid Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 in Parliament, which is now expected to be revoked in full when the House reconvenes.

He added that government has abandoned plans to merely amend the regulation, which permits mining in forest reserves, and will instead pursue a complete repeal.

He further assured that existing mining laws will be reviewed and strengthened as part of a comprehensive approach to eliminate galamsey.
