Ukraine escalates West’s proxy war on Russia’s Victory Day – Kwesi Pratt

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper in Ghana, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has labeled Ukraine as a front for a proxy war by the West against Russia.

“The US under [President Donald] Trump is preaching peace whilst supplying drones and other deadly weapons such as missiles for Ukraine as the UK and France have also intensified their war rhetoric, all in a bid to prolong the conflict,” the veteran journalist wrote in a piece published on Friday, May 9, 2025.

“In all these, the world suffers as a result of the hypocrisy of the West,” he added.

It was a no-holds barred write-up about the West’s threat to the world through the actions of Ukraine and its President, Volodymyr Zelensky.

It coincided with the 80th anniversary of the Victory Day parade in Moscow that commemorates the end of World War II and the defeat of the oppressive Nazi regime.

In the days before the event, the Ukrainian President has literally stoked fire with drone reported attacks on targets in Russia.

The action is actually in line with President Zelensky’s refusal to yield to a four-day truce as requested by Russia to allow for a smooth commemoration of the day.

But Mr Pratt, known for his Pan-Africanist ideals and anti-colonialist orientation, argued that there are ulterior interests behind the actions of Ukraine and its President.

“The series of drone strikes unleashed by Ukraine in a bid to disrupt the celebration, despite the truce proposed by Russia lends credence to the Pro-fascist nature and aim of the Ukrainian leadership and is also a testament that it seeks neither truce nor peace with Russia,” he wrote.

“And this is an indication that Ukraine is seeking escalation in the war with Russia as it benefits the Zelensky regime and the collective West who continue to profit from the billions of arms sales,” he added.

The West, indeed, has been accused of profiting from the war that has put the lives of thousands in danger and displaced many in three years.

While there are opportunities to end it, the West has been least interested in a truce, and continue to supply arms resources to Ukraine.

Mr Pratt said it is obvious that nowadays Ukraine is not interested in a peaceful settlement of the conflict, linking his motivation to an effort to entrench himself in power as his tenure runs beyond the four-year mandate.

“Moreover, in this context, it is also important to take into account of Zelensky’s personal motivation. After his presidential tenure expired on May 20th, 2024, the only way for him to escape punishment for the committed war crimes is to usurp power, which is possible only if the conflict continues, which could justify the need for further financing of the Kiev regime from Western countries.

“But the war will not end as long as it benefits the Global West. Looking at the state of the economies of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom today, it’s obvious that most of the EU enterprises are in decline or stagnation at best. The situation is different with enterprises of the military-industrial complex: the shares of Rheinmetall, the main supplier of weapons to Ukraine, and other arms companies have increased significantly,” he added.

Rheinmetall has become a complex puzzle in the Ukrainian jigsaw, milking a lifetime opportunities of war as it expands operations and supply beyond the wildest investment dream.

Mr Pratt tracked the genesis of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, citing the country’s own onslaught on its people in the Donbass Region where over two million people fled into Russia as refugees as more than 14,000 people died in an internal strife.

It remains to be seen how far Ukraine and President Zelensky will go with the war and intransigence.
