TEWU-GH declares indefinite strike over council representation dispute

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued on June 24, 2025, to relevant authorities over the recognition of its representatives on the governing councils of traditional universities.

The union argues that despite holding majority membership across all traditional public universities in Ghana, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has sidelined its representatives in favour of those from the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union under the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC).

Addressing the press on Thursday, July 3, TEWU-GH condemned GTEC’s directive, which mandated university authorities to swear in TEWU-TUC representatives onto governing councils, calling it “unfair, unjust, and undemocratic.”

“Despite TEWU-GH’s majority membership and rightful claim to representation, and a lack of satisfactory responses or resolution to our legitimate concerns, TEWU-GH has been left with no choice but to take drastic and immediate action,” the union declared.

The group added that all relevant appeals and engagements with authorities had failed to yield results, leaving the union no option but to lay down their tools.

“This action is necessitated by the failure of relevant authorities to address our longstanding demands and uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and good governance in tertiary education institutions,” they said.
