COCOBOD steps up anti-smuggling efforts with planned Volta Region visit

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is intensifying its efforts to combat the growing threat of cocoa smuggling, with a planned security-focused visit to the Volta Region.

Board Chairman, Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, announced the initiative during a familiarisation tour of COCOBOD facilities on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Tema.

He expressed concern over the impact of smuggling on the integrity and long-term viability of the cocoa sector.

COCOBOD is set to collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to crack down on illicit cross-border activities that continue to undermine export revenues and reduce farmer incomes.

According to Dr. Ampofo, the illegal trade not only distorts official cocoa sales but also threatens the sustainability of one of the country’s most vital export commodities.

“We will be going to the Volta Region with our special services team. I’ve had discussions with the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and as such, the Regional Security Council will be involved.

“We will engage the Ghana Police Service and the Marine Police, and we’ll work closely with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and other security agencies.

“A collaborative network involving the intelligence community and national security is being established to stem the tide of this smuggling threat,” he stated.
