Govt-led transport model ‘unsustainable’ — Navrongo Central MP

Simon Akibange Aworigo, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, has urged a major shift in Ghana’s transport policy, advocating for stronger public-private partnerships (PPPs) to replace what he describes as an unsustainable government-led model.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, on July 8, 2025, the lawmaker criticised stalled infrastructure projects, including the long-promised Pakadan-Paga railway extension to Burkina Faso, which he noted “has not materialised.”

“We need clear policy direction on what we aim to achieve. Pouring state funds into projects and managing them as standalone businesses isn’t a sustainable transport strategy,” Aworigo argued.

“Instead of government monopolising operations, we must involve the private sector, particularly in public transport.”

He stressed that Ghana must abandon the notion that the state should solely fund and manage transport infrastructure, especially amid constrained public finances.

The MP also raised concerns over haphazard investments in high-cost projects without transparent operational plans, warning that the current approach lacks long-term viability.
