A coordinated effort by the Central North Regional Police Command led to the successful location of Nana Professor Okogyeaman Ameyaw Dankwa Okokroko II, Chief of Assin Wurakese, following reports of his alleged abduction.

According to initial reports, the chief was taken from his residence at Assin Nkukuasa around 5:30 a.m. by four unidentified men dressed in military camouflage, face masks and wielding weapons on Tuesday, August 19.

The incident caused widespread panic among residents.

The Central North Regional Police Command, upon receiving the report, swiftly deployed a team to the scene and later activated intelligence units, mobilised patrol teams, and issued alerts to all checkpoints across the Central and Eastern Regions upon realising that the Chief was whisked away.

The operation led to the interception of a Mitsubishi pickup truck with registration number GN-833-24 in Asamankese at approximately 9:05 a.m., with the chief and four others onboard.

The Chief and the four individuals were detained at Asamankese at the orders of DCOP Abraham Acquaye, the Central North Regional Police commander.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, August 20, DCOP Abraham Acquaye clarified that the men in question were operatives from the National Security Secretariat who picked the Chief to assist in an ongoing national security investigation.

According to the commander, the chief was subsequently handed over to a formal national security team around 6:30 pm on Tuesday, following a request by the police.

DCOP Acquaye urged the public to remain calm and assured residents that the matter is being handled professionally in the interest of public safety and national security.

Meanwhile, some community members have expressed concerns over the manner in which the National Security officials carried out the arrest, describing it as aggressive, unprofessional, and likely to incite fear and panic.
