Ken Agyapong: Helicopter tragedy a wake-up call to end partisanship

Businessman and politician Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a 2028 NPP flagbearer hopeful, has described the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives as a wake-up call for Ghana to end unnecessary partisanship in national affairs.

Speaking in a live phone interview on Oman FM today, the Assin Central legislator cautioned against the over-politicization of critical national issues, stressing that propaganda and populism only serve to derail the nation’s progress.

“This tragedy should remind us that unnecessary partisanship is destroying our country. It is about time we ended the over-politicization of national issues. Propaganda and vitriolic attacks must not stifle important national projects,” he said.

Mr. Agyapong cited the long-debated matter of acquiring a new Presidential Jet as an example. According to him, former President Akufo-Addo’s administration faced needless opposition from some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when the proposal came up, even though, in the long term, a fit-for-purpose Presidential Jet would be more cost-effective than continuous expenditure on chartered flights.

He emphasized that attention should rather be placed on the benefits of presidential travels, including building international partnerships and attracting investments, rather than turning the issue into political banter.

“As politicians, we must be wary of the adverse impact of populism and propaganda on our national interest. Let’s rather pursue initiatives that will benefit the country,” he added.

The Assin Central MP, who has declared his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party into the 2028 general elections, urged both government and opposition leaders to learn from the tragic crash and put Ghana’s safety and development above political expedience.
