Akwatia by-election: NPP campaigning only with funeral dirges – NDC

The Eastern Regional Deputy Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nathaniel Tetteh, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of running a campaign “gasping for breath” ahead of the Akwatia by-election.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Akwatia Watch on Thursday, August 28, Tetteh claimed the NPP had no concrete plans or positive message for the people of Akwatia, resorting instead to constant references to the late Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

“The NPP has nothing in store for the people of Akwatia, and that is why when you come to the constituency, the only message they have is funeral messages,” he said.

“They have been playing funeral dirges for the past two weeks and showing pictures of the late Hon. Ernest Kumi. Those are the only messages they have.”

Tetteh further alleged that the NPP was exploiting Kumi’s memory for political gain.

“They have been crying and pretending to love the late Ernest Kumi more than his own family. But we know it is just a ploy to take advantage and farm for votes, and the people are not going to fall for that,” he added.

The by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, has become a high-stakes contest. The NPP’s constituency treasurer, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, will face off against the NDC’s constituency secretary, Bernard Bediako, in a race that has drawn national attention due to Akwatia’s reputation as a swing seat.

To forestall unrest, the Ghana Police Service has announced the deployment of officers before, during, and after the polls. The officers, some of whom recently completed a five-day intensive training programme, have been tasked with safeguarding law and order and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
