Major transport unions in Accra have declared their intention to embark on a strike on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, to protest what they describe as the unlawful encroachment of lands designated for lorry stations by private developers.
The unions include the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association, Commercial Transport Operators, and the Container Owners Association.
At a press briefing in Accra, Deputy National PRO for GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said the encroachment — particularly at the Accra-CMB station — has left drivers with no choice but to pick up passengers at unauthorised locations.
He explained that this development has also forced traders onto the streets, worsening traffic congestion and creating safety risks.
Mr. Amoah warned that the situation endangers both commuters and traders, exposing them to potential accidents and health hazards. He urged the government to act swiftly to resolve the matter.
“It’s very important that we come up with this decision. It’s about the CMB Lorry Park. It’s been in existence for so many ages now. We’ve been working, serving the nation throughout the 16 regions. For some time now, some businessmen have invaded the lorry park. Most of the portion has been taken away from us. We tried to manage the little that is left with us.
“Yet, another businessman has come up to take the remaining from us. And we are just pleading with the government to please help us, return the lorry park as well. You know, every lorry park goes with the women as well. When they bring their wares, we’ve given them a space, and they also sell and make ends meet over there.
“Here we are, the lorry park is completely getting out of hand. So we are pleading with the government to please save us from the situation in which we are now. Tomorrow, God willing, if we are all safe, we will embark on a strike and present a petition to the President,” he said.
