Students of the Tamale Technical University (TaTU) on Tuesday, September 16, clashed with the police, burning tires and causing damage to university property during a protest on campus.
The students were demonstrating against what they described as systemic neglect of student welfare, financial mismanagement, and unjustified fee increments by the university’s management.
They accused management of breaching its fiduciary duty and misapplying student fees. Among their concerns were poor sanitation despite the collection of sanitation fees, lack of medical services despite medical examination fees, underdeveloped infrastructure despite development levies, and the alleged diversion of examination funds.
Though the demonstration began peacefully, tensions later escalated, leading to minor injuries. Eyewitnesses reported that three students were hurt—two sustained head injuries, while one suffered a leg injury.
They held placards with inscriptions such as “Director of Finance Must Go” and “Enough Is Enough.”
