Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has expressed surprise over the decision to hold a rerun for the Kpandai constituency.

The rerun follows the November 24 High Court ruling ordering a new election within 30 days of declaring the Kpandai seat vacant. Nyindam has contested the ruling, asserting that the 2024 parliamentary election was conducted fairly and has vowed to participate in the rerun despite ongoing legal challenges.

The Electoral Commission received formal confirmation from the Clerk of Parliament on December 8, officially declaring the Kpandai seat vacant and setting the stage for the December 30 rerun.

But Mercer on Citi FM’s The Big Issue on Saturday, December 13, expressed concern about the urgency to conduct the rerun while the affected candidate, Matthew Nyindam, is seeking to have the High Court’s orders stayed.

“I was surprised at the decision that was handed down by the High Court. Indeed and in fact, post the decision, the letter that emanated from the office of the Clerk of Parliament to the EC and the subsequent decision by the EC to hold the rerun is what is most surprising to me,” he said.

“I wonder the indecent haste that is informing the decision to conduct the rerun when the affected party in this case Matthew Nyindam seeking for the orders of the high court to be stayed.”
