Unpaid nurses and midwives threaten strike over 11 months’ arrears

Members of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives have raised serious concerns over delays in the payment of their eleven months’ arrears, warning that they may be forced to lay down their tools if the government fails to address their grievances.

The coalition, which represents over 6,000 members nationwide, revealed that some members have received only one month’s payment, while about 300 have yet to receive a single month’s salary since they began work in December 2024.

The members expressed frustration over the daily hardships caused by the delayed payments, describing the government’s handling of the matter as deceptive. They said the Ministry of Health had previously assured them that a payment plan would be released following the settlement of the November salary, but no such plan has materialized.

At a press conference held in Ejisu in the Ashanti Region on Monday, December 15, 2025, the group called on the government to honour its commitment and settle all outstanding payments immediately.

“We have responsibilities like rent, families, and children to cater for. Just this month alone, many of our landlords were after us for rent. I mostly commute from Komfo Anokye Hospital to Santasi, and sometimes I have to continue on foot to get home because I haven’t been paid. This situation has affected us deeply,” said Michael Makafui, one of the aggrieved nurses.

He added, “We just want to get paid. We wouldn’t be here if they had paid us. We are not asking for promises; we just want our arrears settled this month.”

The coalition’s warning signals a potential disruption in healthcare services if the government does not take urgent action to resolve the issue.
