The Acting Managing Director of the Ghana Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), Awudu Dawuda, has provided an update on the agency’s fleet operations as part of efforts to address the country’s ongoing public transport challenges.
Briefing Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang during a visit to the GAPTE office in Accra on Friday, January 16, 2026, Mr. Dawuda said GAPTE currently operates 245 buses across multiple locations, with additional vehicles deployed to respond to growing commuter demand.
He noted that on the Accra Transit Corridors, the number of buses in active service has increased from 80 to 105.
Mr. Dawuda acknowledged that some buses are currently out of service due to maintenance and other operational requirements.
| Location / Operation | Number of Buses |
|---|---|
| Accra Transit Corridors | 105 |
| University of Cape Coast | 12 |
| University of Health Allied Sciences | 5 |
| Tamale Transit Operations | 2 |
| SWIFT Spot (Kotoka International Airport) | 5 |
| Aviance Commuter | 2 |
| Civil Aviation Commuters | 2 |
| Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) | 3 |
| Total Operational Buses | 136* |
“11 buses have been grounded at the workshop, and 28 buses are also at the depot holding,” he said.
He explained that the expansion of the fleet forms part of GAPTE’s strategy to support other public transport services amid the current sector-wide challenges.
“The records must reflect that it is because of the issues that we have that we have increased our fleet in terms of the number of vehicles that we operate on our corridors,” Mr. Dawuda added.
GAPTE currently operates six main transit corridors, but two additional corridors have been introduced to accommodate increased commuter demand and help ease congestion.
