The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has safely disposed of a large consignment of opioid drugs following a directive from the Tema High Court.
The seized opioids were intercepted at the Tema Port during a joint inspection in December, 2025, conducted by the FDA, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Authorities revealed that the consignment contained opioid pharmaceuticals laced with other substances, raising serious concerns about illicit drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
Investigations also uncovered multiple documentation violations, highlighting weaknesses in cargo monitoring and regulatory compliance.
In response to the findings, the FDA and the GRA jointly applied to the Tema High Court for authorisation to dispose of the drugs.
The court granted the application, ordering the FDA to safely destroy the consignment in line with Section 132(2) of the Public Health Act.
