John Dumelo pledges action after death of UniMAC-IJ student

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has assured students and residents of his commitment to improving road safety following the death of Nelson Blay Nokotey, a student of the University of Media Arts and Communication (UNIMAC -IJ).

Describing the incident as unfortunate in an X post on Saturday, January 24, the MP emphasised that student safety within the constituency remains his top priority.

“The safety of each student in Ayawaso West is my utmost priority. The passing away of Nelson, the student journalist who was trying to cross the N1, is very unfortunate,” Dumelo stated.

He added that, as an MP, it is his responsibility to ensure that appropriate measures are taken immediately to prevent similar tragedies.

Nelson died after being knocked down by a vehicle near the Dzorwulu traffic light intersection on the N1 stretch, close to the Lapaz footbridge, after he had visited campus and was returning home. His death has sparked widespread concern among students and renewed calls for improved pedestrian safety along the busy highway.

The MP extended his condolences to Nelson’s family and the UniMAC-IJ, stating that “My sincere condolences to the family and also to the entire GIJ community. I am with you.

Meanwhile, students of UniMAC-IJ held a solemn vigil in memory of Nelson was held on Friday, January 23.
