The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has congratulated former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on what it described as an emphatic victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Dr. Bawumia was declared winner by the Electoral Commission of Ghana after securing 56.48 per cent of the total votes cast, earning him the party’s flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections. His closest contender, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent.

In a statement issued on January 31 and signed by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party formally endorsed the outcome of the contest and rallied support behind its candidate.

“The Party congratulates Dr. Bawumia on his emphatic victory and wishes him well as he leads the NPP into the 2028 General Elections,” the statement said.

The NPP also commended all five aspirants—Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong—for what it described as their commitment to democratic principles and the maturity displayed throughout the primary process.

The party further expressed appreciation to the Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by Joseph Osei Owusu, as well as the Electoral Commission of Ghana, the Ghana Police Service, the media, and party delegates for ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free election.

Looking ahead to the 2028 polls, the NPP stressed the need for unity and collective effort, urging members and supporters to close ranks behind the newly elected flagbearer.

“As the contest has now concluded, the NPP calls on all members and supporters to unite, reconcile, and rally behind our elected flagbearer in the supreme interest of the Party. United in purpose, the NPP will work tirelessly to secure victory in the next general elections. The elephant is the winning symbol, and by the grace of God, we shall prevail,” the statement said.
