The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, has sought a one-week break for 147 students of Tolon Senior High School who were severely affected by a fire outbreak that gutted the girls’ dormitory on the morning of Monday, February 2.

The decision followed a visit to the school by the Regional Minister, accompanied by the Northern Regional Director of Education and the Deputy Administrator of GETFund, to assess the extent of damage and gather first-hand information on the incident.

The fire displaced about 346 students in total, with 147 losing all their personal belongings after several dormitories on the top floor of the facility were destroyed.

Speaking in an interview during the visit, the Minister expressed deep concern about the increasing spate of fire outbreaks in second-cycle institutions across the country, describing the trend as worrying and demanding urgent attention.“I am sure that within this one week, the headmaster and his management team will find temporary ways of handling the situation when the students return. For those who remain on campus, we will explore alternative arrangements and see how best to manage the situation,” he stated.

The Ghana National Fire Service has since brought the fire under control, while investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the outbreak. Authorities say further support measures will be announced as assessments continue.
