NAPO facilitated my entry to Parliament – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has disclosed that his successful entry into Parliament in 2012 was largely shaped by the guidance and strategic support of the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Speaking at a public lecture held at the DF Annan Auditorium on Thursday, February 26, the Effutu legislator offered rare personal insights into the behind-the-scenes mentorship that contributed to his maiden parliamentary victory.

Addressing participants on the theme “Centre Left, Centre Right, Formulating Policies that Serve a Growing Democracy,” Afenyo-Markin recounted how, as a relatively young candidate contesting the 2012 parliamentary elections, he benefited from the strategic expertise of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who at the time was serving as the party’s Director of Elections.

According to the Minority Leader, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, went beyond routine political support and personally developed a campaign manual tailored to guide him through the electoral process in the Effutu constituency.

“Back in 2012, as a young candidate in my constituency, it took the director of elections to train me and prepare me with his own manual on how to conduct my campaign and win elections, and I followed the manual, and on the D-day, the reality was that I had to go by the tutorial notes, and I won.

“I came to Parliament, and he held my hand and never gave up on me even in difficult times, and I am honoured that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is here even in his tight schedule.”

The public lecture, which explored ideological positioning in Ghana’s democracy and the need for pragmatic policymaking, provided a platform for reflections not only on governance philosophy but also on personal political journeys and alliances that shape leadership trajectories.
