The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has announced plans to build a six-month food buffer to protect Ghana against potential emergencies.

The ministry revealed that a government allocation of GHC 300 million in 2025 enabled the National Food Buffer Stock to purchase surplus agricultural produce, ensuring that government warehouses remain well-stocked.

Speaking during a visit by Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Tuesday, March 17, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, said the ministry intends to collaborate with private warehouse operators to expand storage capacity for additional food reserves.

“This is the first time in Ghana’s history that the Republic is actively building food buffers for emergencies.

“Our goal is to maintain a six-month cover so that, in the event of any crisis, Ghana can rely on this stock before needing to import additional supplies,” he said.
