The Government of Senegal has called an independent international investigation into allegations of corruption within the governing bodies of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following the Appeals Committee’s decision to strip the Senegalese national team of its 2025 African Championship title and award it to Morocco.
In an statement signed by the Government Spokesperson, Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye, and dated Wednesday, March 18, Senegal described the ruling as “unprecedented” and of “exceptional gravity,” arguing that it contradicts fundamental sporting principles such as fairness, loyalty, and respect for the rules of the game.
Senegal posits that the decision resulted from a “manifestly erroneous interpretation of the regulations,” leading to what it described as an unjust outcome.
Senegal warned that by overturning a match result achieved in accordance with the rules, CAF risks undermining its credibility and the trust African nations place in its sporting institutions.
The Senegalese government said it would pursue all appropriate legal avenues, including taking the matter to competent international courts, to ensure the rightful sporting result is restored.
“Senegal unequivocally rejects this attempt at unjustified interference. It calls for the reopening of an independent international investigation into allegations of corruption within the governing bodies of CAF.
“Furthermore, Senegal will exhaust all appropriate legal avenues, including before the competent international courts, to ensure that justice is done and that the sporting result is restored,” the statement read.
The government also expressed solidarity with Senegalese citizens stranded in Morocco following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and honor of its national team.
