Sustain your advocacy on anti-LGBTQ bill – Haruna Mohammed to NDC MPs

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has criticised Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he describes as a lack of commitment to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

According to him, some NDC MPs who were vocal proponents of the bill while in opposition have failed to maintain the same urgency following the party’s return to power.

His comments come amid ongoing criticism of President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, whom the opposition accuses of softening their stance on the proposed anti-LGBTQ+ legislation since returning to power.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, April 7, Haruna Mohammed contrasted the NDC’s posture with that of Assin South MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, whom he commended for his consistency on the issue.

He noted that Rev. Ntim Fordjour has remained outspoken on the bill both during the tenure of former President Nana Akufo-Addo and under the current administration.

Haruna Mohammed argued that the NDC and the President have not demonstrated the same level of commitment and urged them to sustain the advocacy that characterised their earlier position to ensure the bill is tabled and considered by Parliament.

“We want the same interest level of those who were championing it. You see the consistency in Ntim Fordjour. He was part of the proponents of the other one and he is part of this one. He was vociferous even when his party was in government. Today, those who said that President Mahama will not know peace if he fails to sign the bill, President Mahama is knowing peace and is also enjoying peace,” he said.
