The Tema Shipyard has emphatically stated that it does not engage in the sale or distribution of fish, contrary to claims circulated in the media following a mass fish mortality incident in the area.
The incident sparked concerns that dead fish found near the shipyard may have been harvested, distributed or sold to the public.
According to the company, it was merely a victim of the situation, as a swarm of dead fish drifted into its vicinity.
Speaking during a meeting with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly on Friday, April 10, Chief Executive Officer of Tema Shipyard Limited, Alhaji Osman Sulemana, dismissed suggestions that the facility is involved in fish marketing.
“I am so surprised when the information is just circulating within the media circle, saying that people should not come in and buy fish at the shipyard. At the shipyard! We have nothing to do with this. We don’t have anything to do with either marketing.
“There is no market for fish around here. And I’m surprised that they didn’t even attribute that thing to the Fishing Harbour, which is just in between us here. So I’m so surprised about that,” he said
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 6, was detected during a routine disinfestation exercise when Port Health officials were alerted to fish floating along the slipway.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has moved to calm public concerns following the discovery of a large number of dead fish at the Tema Port Shipyard, assuring the public that there is no immediate threat to public health.
