The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that two armed robbery suspects were shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with police following a robbery incident in Tema.

In an April 13 press release, the Tema Regional Police Command said the incident occurred on Monday morning at about 8:30am at Tema Community 5.

According to the police, the suspects had attacked and robbed a mobile money (MoMo) vendor before attempting to flee the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim operates a MoMo shop at the Aba Fosuah Plaza in Community 5.

One of the suspects, who was riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, reportedly approached the vendor under the pretext of making a cash-out transaction.

While the vendor was retrieving her phone to process the transaction, the suspect pulled out a pistol and demanded that she hand over a bag containing cash.

The victim resisted, leading to a struggle involving both the pillion rider and the motorbike rider. During the confrontation, the pillion passenger shot the vendor in the leg, after which the suspects grabbed the cash and fled on the motorbike.

Police say a patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been deployed nearby for security duties at an event, quickly responded to a distress call and pursued the suspects.

The suspects, who were riding a black Royal motorbike with registration number M-24-GE 778, reportedly opened fire on the pursuing officers near a junction close to Smart Hotel in Community 6.

The police returned fire, and in the ensuing exchange, both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and fell off the motorbike.

The suspects were transported to the Police Hospital for medical attention but were pronounced dead on arrival by a medical officer.

Their bodies have since been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
