‘Ghana’s democratic credentials under attack’ – Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party communicators to remain resolute and defend democratic principles, amid what he described as increasing intimidation under the government of John Dramani Mahama.

Dr Bawumia made the remarks when a delegation of national, regional, and constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party from the Bono Region visited him, on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at his residence to express appreciation for his support following the arrest and detention of party member Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando.

He condemned what he alleged to be the use of state security institutions to suppress dissent and free speech.

“Ghana’s democratic credentials are under attack. Freedom of expression is being sacrificed for political convenience,” he said.

Dr Bawumia called on party communicators to remain firm and outspoken, urging them not to be intimidated.

“The intimidation can never break us,” he said, encouraging members to remain fact-driven in their engagements while holding government accountable.

The National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, who led the delegation, thanked Dr Bawumia for his support and assured him that party communicators would remain steadfast despite what he described as intimidation.

The party has also announced plans to stage a demonstration in Sunyani on Wednesday, April 22, under the theme “Yensuro Ahunahuna Demo,” to protest what it calls government-sponsored attacks on free speech and democracy.
