The government has lifted the curfew imposed on Karaga township and its surrounding communities in the Northern Region, citing a marked improvement in the security situation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Minister for the Interior announced that the decision was taken on the advice of the National Security Council and executed through an Executive Instrument.
The curfew, which had restricted movement between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., was initially introduced to contain tensions and restore calm in the area. Authorities say the situation has since stabilised, allowing for the immediate removal of the restriction.
Despite the lifting of the curfew, government is urging residents to remain vigilant and committed to peace. Chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, and the youth have been specifically called upon to exercise restraint and adopt non-violent approaches in addressing any lingering disputes.
Security measures, however, remain partly in place. The government has maintained a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within Karaga and its environs. Officials warned that anyone found in violation of this directive will be arrested and prosecuted.
The curfew formed part of broader efforts to prevent escalation of conflict in the Karaga district.
