Korle Bu Allied Health staff reject removal of Lab Head

Allied health professionals at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) have raised strong objections over the revocation of the appointment of the Head of Laboratory Services, warning that the move could disrupt operations and undermine prior agreements reached with the government.

In a letter dated May 5, 2026, addressed to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam. The Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professionals (GFAHPS), Korle Bu Chapter, described the decision as a violation of the consensus reached during a stakeholder meeting convened by the Ministry of Health earlier this year.

The group said the February 3, 2026, meeting had agreed on the appointment of a Medical Laboratory Scientist as Head of Laboratory Services under the Sub-BMC structure, a move intended to ensure accountability, professional integrity, and effective governance.

However, management has since withdrawn the appointment and reassigned oversight of the Central Laboratory to the Director of Medical Affairs, a decision the federation says contradicts the earlier agreement.

“This decision undermines the agreed outcomes of the Ministry-led engagement, established professional frameworks, and the integrity and autonomy of Allied Health practice,” the statement said.

The federation warned that the development has sparked widespread concern among allied health staff at the hospital and could erode confidence in ongoing stakeholder engagements.

It has therefore called for the immediate reversal of the decision and urged management to align its actions with the position agreed during the Ministry of Health-led discussions.

“We respectfully but firmly request that Management reconsider and reverse the decision,” the group stated, cautioning that failure to resolve the issue could lead to further action by allied health stakeholders.

The federation added that while it remains committed to maintaining professionalism and industrial harmony within the hospital, it would be guided by “lawful and appropriate collective decisions” if the matter remains unresolved.
