The President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Prof. Ernest Yorke, has disclosed that the association is providing psychological, psychiatric and legal support for health professionals implicated in the Charles Amissah case as investigations and disciplinary processes continue.
His comments follow the release of findings by the Prof. Agyemang Badu Akosa committee, which concluded that delays and lapses in emergency medical care contributed to the death of the 29-year-old engineer after he was turned away by several health facilities.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, May 11, Prof. Yorke said the GMA is taking steps to ensure the affected health workers receive the necessary emotional and legal assistance throughout the process.
“We have enlisted the support of a psychologist and a psychiatrist to support them through the process. We are giving them legal support as well. We will police the process to make sure that it is fair, equitable, and just,” he said.
According to him, the association is committed to ensuring due process while also safeguarding the well-being of the medical professionals involved.
The case has generated intense public debate following the committee’s conclusion that Charles Amissah died from what it described as medical neglect rather than injuries sustained in the initial hit-and-run incident.
In the aftermath of the report, some doctors and nurses linked to the case have been implicated pending further disciplinary action by the appropriate regulatory bodies.
The GMA has, however, maintained that while accountability is important, disciplinary procedures must be conducted fairly and in accordance with established professional and legal standards.
