The National Identification Authority (NIA) has registered 32,000 children between the ages of 6 and 14 in the Volta and Oti regions as part of its ongoing Ghana Card registration exercise for minors.
The exercise, which commenced on May 5, is aimed at ensuring that children within the age bracket are enrolled onto the National Identity Register to enable them to access essential services and government programmes.
Speaking at a press briefing in Ho on Wednesday, May 14, the Executive Secretary of the NIA, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, urged parents to ensure that children who have attained the required age acquire the Ghana Card.
“It is a nationwide exercise and, so far, it has been a very smooth process. There is a Legislative Instrument (LI) that makes it mandatory for the Ghana Card to be used in any transaction where identification is required,” he said.
“The Ghana Card number now serves as your National Health Insurance, SSNIT, and TIN. This means that a child who is registered here already has these numbers and will not need to register separately for these identification cards again,” he added.
