Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has assured families displaced by the recent fire outbreak at the Police Barracks opposite the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters in Accra Central that the government will provide immediate support, including temporary accommodation and relief items, as efforts begin to rebuild the affected facility.

The minister gave the assurance during a visit to the scene of the devastating fire on Thursday, June 4, which displaced several families and destroyed properties.

He was accompanied by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service.

The visit was aimed at assessing the extent of the damage, interacting with affected residents and gathering firsthand information on the challenges facing victims in the aftermath of the incident.

Addressing residents during the visit, Muntaka expressed sympathy to the affected families and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that those displaced receive the necessary support during the recovery period.

“The visit was to assess the situation firsthand, interact with affected residents, and assure them of the government’s commitment to supporting them in this difficult period. I informed the displaced families that arrangements are being made to provide temporary accommodation while plans for the reconstruction of the barracks are being finalised.

“In addition, victims will receive cash assistance, clothing, and other relief items through NADMO,” the minister wrote in a Facebook post.

The fire, which ravaged sections of the police barracks, left several households displaced and resulted in extensive destruction of personal belongings and property.

Although emergency responders managed to contain the blaze, many residents lost valuable possessions and are now facing the challenge of rebuilding their lives.

As part of his tour, Muntaka also visited a police officer who sustained injuries during the fire outbreak and is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

The minister expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the injured officer and assured him of the government’s support throughout his recovery process.
