Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has said Ghanaians are looking to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for what he described as a credible alternative to address the ongoing cocoa sector challenges.
His comments come amid concerns over recent adjustments in the cocoa producer price. On February 12, government announced a reduction in the producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season. The move has triggered debate among stakeholders in the cocoa value chain, particularly farmers.
In response to the developments, the Minority Caucus constituted a Select Committee to tour cocoa-growing communities across the country and engage farmers directly on their concerns. The committee, led by Frank Annoh-Dompreh, gathered feedback and compiled recommendations aimed at improving conditions in the sector.
Presenting the committee’s report to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said the expectations of cocoa farmers and the wider public are firmly placed on the NPP flagbearer.
“The Ghanaian people are waiting to hear from their saviour. They know you will be able to say something that will be assuring, and not just assuring, also an honest statement for them to know that you will not just come and make a promise that cannot be fulfilled,” he said.
The Minority says the findings from the tour are expected to inform policy discussions on how to stabilise the cocoa sector and address the concerns of farmers going forward.
