The 15th Ghana Movie Awards wrapped up in grand style at the Kempinski Hotel on Monday, June 8, celebrating outstanding talents across Ghana and Africa under the theme “Rewarding African Excellence.”
Popular Ghanaian stars, including James Gardiner, Clemento Suarez, Akabenezer, Juliet Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Deyemi Okanlawon, and others, were among the major names who lit up the red carpet and took home top honours alongside other industry heavyweights.
“Sukura” dominated several technical categories, winning Achievement in Production Design (Godwin Mensah), Cinematography (Kofi Asante) and sharing Make-up & Hairstyling honours with Lidya Ashitey.
The film also claimed Best Picture.
“Virgin of the Throne” impressed in the collaboration categories, with Sydney Emade winning Best Actress (African Collaboration) and Deyemi Okanlawon picking up Best Actor (African Collaboration).
Director Frank Rajah Arinze was named Best Film Director, while Martha Ankomah earned Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie.
Juliet Ibrahim’s short film “Behind a Lie” was adjudged Best Short Movie.
Other notable winners included “Kojo Nkansah Lilwin (Actor in Leading Role for Captain Traore), Kalsoume Sinare (Supporting Actress for “Sukura”), and the “King of Tema” who won in both the Editing and Original Score categories.
Akabenezer (Ebenezer Akwesi Antwi) received the Outstanding Contribution to the Ghana Creative Industry award, while “Zari Hassan” was honoured for her contribution to the African Orange Economy. Janet Ayensu of “Sukura” emerged as Discovery of the Year.
The star-studded night also featured appearances by Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Nelson, Kwaku Manu, Daniel Etim Effiong, and many others, highlighting strong Ghana-Nigeria cinematic ties.
